Hugh George Chambers was born Sept. 16, 1969 in Mountain Lakes, N.J. A passionate, dedicated athlete and trusted and respected team player, he was recognized in Parade Magazine as an All-American Lacrosse player. In New Jersey, he won three consecutive All-State football player awards. Hugh also was a serious baseball fan.
Hugh passed away on Jan. 20, 1990. This award, brought to South End Baseball in 2000 by his sister, Norine Chambers Shults, and brother-in-law, Peter Shults, is done in his memory: a loving son, brother and friend; a fearless athlete; a great teammate; and a believer in helping others to succeed. As of the 2010 school year, over $75,000 in grants have been pledged and awarded to worthy students. |
SEB is honored have the support of the Shults/Chambers family.

Jason is a great young adult who always appeared destined to succeed. Dorian Rojas North Florida CC 04-05 & Cumberland University 2006
Dorian Rojas came to SEB at age 16 under unusual circumstances. Playing for another local program, Dorian was invited to play with us in a regional tournament in Trenton NJ but bowed out to stay in a tournament with his local team, a decision we fully supported. After his local team was eliminated, Dorian called to see if he could still join us in NJ. Dorian caught a 5am train the next morning and showed up for the semifinals 10 minutes before game time, went 4 for 4 with a game winnning hit, and helped us make it to the Nationals in Chicago. Dorian is on the record books at both Cumberland and NFCC, has been a Rookie of the year and all-star in the Park league, and has played professionally with the Joliet Jackhammers of Illinois and Macon Music of Georgia in the independent league. |

Jose Diaz North Florida CC 05-06 & Cumberland University 2007
Jose Diaz followed the path of Dorian and enjoyed both the baseball and educational experiences of going to NFCC and Cumberland U. Jose has continued his playing career in the Park League of Boston, the oldest amateur program in the country. As a catcher at West Roxbury High School, Jose had the painful pleasure of receiving 94mph fastballs from another former SEB player and current Red Sox setup man, Manny Delcarmen. |

Marvin Malaret North Florida CC 2006
Marvin was on an SEB travel team that won a regional tourney in CT to qualify for the fall nationals in Florida. While the funding for such a trip looked grim, a donor stepped forward to make it possible so we went for it. While there, we invited several local College Coaches and a few MLB scouts to look at our team and see if any kids might be a good fit. The head coach of NFCC was the only one present but took Marvin, Jose and Dorian on partial scholarships. We also got a visit from a Minnesota Twins scout that liked our Shortstop, Juan Carlos Portes, so much that he drafted him 2 years later. Not a bad trip (we also beat Waycross Georgia in the National Final by scoring 5 runs in our last at bat!) Marvin was the MVP of the Boston Park League in 2008 |

Jesus 'Hollywood" Rodriguez
Jesus, SEB player and Coach from 1987 to present, is considered by many to be the face of SEB. As a youthworker at several Boston Community Centers, currently at the Ohrenberger Ctr in West Roxbury, Hollywood has shown the ability to make a positive impact on young lives. Without the secondary education most higher positions require, his options to advance have been limited. With the help of HCSF, Jesus is now enrolled in Child Care Development courses and will continue to work towards a bright future as a leader of young people. His lifetime contract as SEB coach remains in effect.

Rony Mercado Suffolk University 2006
Rony was the first player to receive support from the fund and was a unanimous choice. An SEB player throughout his youth, Rony set the standard for sportsmanship, teamwork and hustle. Mercado played baseball at Suffolk for four seasons 2003-2006 and was named to the Great Northeast Athletic Conference All-Conference First team in 2006. He was second-team All-GNAC in 2004 and 2005. Rony was passed over during the MLB draft in 06, but made his professional debut in July of 2008 pitching for the Brockton Rox of the independent league. Rony remains active on our Park League team and has been an all star selection each season. |
